I'd just like to reiterate that looking butch and scorning makeup will not make men respect/like you any more than being frilly and feminine will. Any butch female (straight, gay, bi) can tell horror tales of men acting anything but respectful towards her.
And personal anecdote: whether I wore an eye catching, feminine outfit that would give some people the shits, or else wore blue jeans and flannel w/my hair pinned back...when I was a teenage girl, men and boys would glare at me with hatred because I wanted to play Mortal Kombat in the arcades, just as they did. I can't recount the number of times that I would place my quarter up on the coin-op to show that I wanted to play after whomever lost the current round, only for the male player to "accidentally" knock my quarter off the machine (funniest damned thing, that the "accidents" looked very much like men purposefully swiping off my quarter...). And the damnedest thing - dressing less feminine didn't stop them from doing this, didn't make them more respectful. Being "oh soo pretty" didn't stop this behavior, didn't bring out their prince-in-shining-armor, either. The only thing that stopped this was, sadly, my retreat from the arcades once my cousin got a SNES system that he and I could play MK on.
I could, of course, talk about waitressing and waitresses and how menfolk pinch your ass, even when you're not wearing makeup(lack of it doesn't seem to slow them down any)...but I'm probably prolonging the whole kerfluffle, so I won't.
So, maybe, just possibly, it's not so much the clothes & makeup that causes trouble; it's men's attitudes - and they're using clothing & makeup as a shield for their behavior.
